Besides being one of the greatest rappers ever (don’t try to debate me bro), Jay Z also has a scholarship fund foundation which began over a decade ago.
According to its website, The Shawn Carter Scholarship Fund (SCSF) was “founded on the belief that any motivated individual in need should have the opportunity to further his or her education. All Shawn Carter Scholars are required to ‘give back’ by conducting community service and by serving as mentors to younger, aspiring Shawn Carter Scholars.”
The SCSF is co-founded by his mother, Gloria Carter, and together they “provide individual grants, paid directly to the educational institution, to every student who qualifies and reapplies yearly, from admission to graduation.”
The cost of pursuing higher education is so expensive and often many teens do not have the funding, thus the opportunity, to attend college. “With me taking on this responsibility, we make dreams come true,” Gloria Carter told ESSENCE.
Since its origin, the SCSF has given more than $4 million for students.
Recently SCSF landed a major partnership that will provide even more opportunities to underserved children.
Through the partnership with eBay for Charity, people can bid on items like a VIP lounge party at the 40/40 Club in New York City, Made in America VIP passes, and VIP concert tickets. This partnership will last until May 24th and all proceeds will go towards the Shawn Carter Foundation’s educational programs and scholarship funds for students.
