Stephanie Johnson Shares Why There Is No Such Thing As An Overnight Success

It doesn’t matter if you move to a new city or move back to your hometown after college, the social scene struggle is real. If you are like me, you know it can be hard finding like-minded individuals to hang out with, and difficult to find cool things in the city to do besides drinking at happy hour (although I do love a good happy hour). This desire to find like-minded individuals is one of the reasons why Stephanie Johnson started Singles & The City in Dallas, Texas. Singles & The City is a members-based organization that provides “fun, mind-expanding activities for single professionals, while building solid relationships with other like-minded empire builders.” Currently, Singles & The City is in Dallas, Texas, Austin, Texas, and Detroit, Michigan. Stephanie will be launching Singles & The City in Los Angeles, California in the summer of 2017.

We recently caught up with Stephanie, and you can learn more about her and Singles & The City below.

Please share your career journey with Singles & The City

-I started Singles & The City 3 years ago. It was a small group at my church (Covenant Carrollton) and my purpose was to enjoy life with co-ed singles. I was so over the wack Christian’s single scene! After launching my 1st book club meeting on a Monday night, I had 12 people that came. The next one doubled, and by fall I had over 100 members. The book club grew really quick and we outgrew our church community within the first 4-6 months. I have since turned it into a Single’s Social Community and a members based event club.

What inspired you to start Singles & The City?

-Besides being so over the wack Christian’s single scene, I was also over the lack of diversity in Dallas. I was sick of going to all black events and meeting the same people, and hated being the “smart black girl” at the white social events. There wasn’t a middle group, so I created the social community I desired.

What is the hardest thing you have learned about starting a business?

-The hardest thing I’ve learned about starting a business is that THERE IS NO OVERNIGHT SUCCESS! You will absolutely, positively go through HELL, but if you believe in your business, are changing lives, and trailblazing the way for others – stick to it and you will prosper in due season.

What has been the highlight of your life as an entrepreneur?

-The biggest highlight has been my amazing and ever expanding social network and net WORTH. Relationships are priceless. Favor is priceless. Being kind to others is priceless. I love what I do, and it’s the gift that keeps on giving.
